Welcome to the Zombie Fiesta! A Snag the Tag Zombie Party...

Zombie brain tags are hidden around a number of geocaching events around the world (to be announced below). The tags will be published daily in the week leading up to the events.

Tag finders can redeem their Brain tag for Walt, the Zombie trackable geocoin at the local event. A different version of the geocoin (Shuck, the Zombie) will be available for sale at the events.

Redemption rules: one coin per household. Each tag is associated with a specific event and must be redeemed at that event (i.e. you may not redeem a tag picked up in New York at an event in Washington).

Dean St, Woodstock, IL, US

Posted in Illinois August 25, 2017 by Elizabeth Crozier The Sinister Story Behind This Popular Illinois Opera House Will Give You Chills There’s a haunted opera house in Illinois that patrons love to visit despite its ghostly resident. Located in the charming downtown of a small town, you may have never even heard of this magnificent yet scary place. Locals and area ghost hunters know the story well. Keep scrolling to learn about the woman who haunts this theatre and the reason why she can’t let go. Enter if you dare. This haunted opera house is home to a single ghost who shows up during shows and practices. Her story is sad but her legacy with scare your pants off.

The building is the tallest structure in Woodstock, a small town northwest of Chicago, and is located in the downtown district. Though it was built in the 1880s, due to fires, the historical building has been restored a few times.

The spirit rumored to haunt this beautiful place is a ghost who has been named "Elvira" by theatre locals familiar with her tale. Once, she was a beautiful actress with dreams of making it big...

After years of hard work, she auditioned for a lead role in the upcoming ballet but was devastated when another girl was chosen for the part instead of her.

Be warned - we're getting to the graphic stuff... "Elvira" then committed suicide by jumping from the highest tower of the building and landing on the street below. Her depressed ghost seems to continue to walk the earth.

Today many speak of seeing a woman with long, yellow hair who disappears. It is believed that her favorite seat in the theatre is 113 and many have seen the seat lower or heard sounds like sighs coming from it. Additional strange phenomena include props falling or completely disappearing from the stage.

The Woodstock Opera house puts on shows regularly including bands, musicals, and other acts. The haunting isn't enough to drive patrons away, as this is one of the most popular attractions in town. Just keep this tale in mind if the empty seat next to you suddenly fills with an invisible presence.

Woodstock Opera House is located at 121 W Van Buren Street in Woodstock, and you can get more information on its website or Facebook page.

cron publish 3 weeks 4 days ago 087 - The Jerusalem Salvation Gates - The Unholy Take The Holy City

Lawton, OK, US

Why did Israel seal off their entire country just days before the undead attacked? What do they know about the origin of the zombie plague? You've come to Jerusalem seeking answers from Mossad (Israeli Intelligence) chief Jurgen Warmbrunn, who explains that months earlier, the Mossad had intercepted an Indian military message claiming that Indian troops were fighting the rakshasa, or zombies. Israel had thereupon quarantined Jerusalem, erecting huge walls around it. Just as Warmbrunn shows you that Israel is allowing survivors to pass through "the Salvation Gates" to take refuge in the city, loudspeaker feedback from the celebratory singing of the refugees prompts zombies to scale the walls and attack!!!

***The co-ordinates lead you to the parking lot of The Holy City of the Wichitas, home of the longest running outdoor Passion play in America (founded 1925; construction 1935). A map of the area stands near the entry gate to the city. You are looking for Pilate's House. The zombies overran the top of the rear wall, near the northwest parapet.

As the corn crop starts to turn brown and fall approaches, the interest in "all things spooky" is on the rise. One of our favorite local haunts is Bloods Point Rd and Blood's point Cemetery in Cherry Valley for years, Stateline area residents have long considered this road as one of the most popular locations for Paranormal energy in all of Illinois. Ghostresearch.org says that while you drive along Bloods Point Rd that most people will notice that the trees begin to look like human beings standing guard. People say that it's almost if the trees are watching your every move as you drive down the road. If you dare to venture out of your vehicle on foot the lookout for the trees! The tree's wooded limbs stretch, in an effort to reach out and grab you. Perhaps the trees are attempting to warn you of things to come if you dare to continue on, but many claim that the heavily wooded area where the trees breathe life are where the ghosts congregate, and if you are quiet, you can watch their every move until they catch site of those that dare to trespass on their sacred grounds. Now I have to admit, a couple of years ago I took a walk along Bloods Point Rd just north of Bloods Point Cemetery and don't recall any of that that happening, but if you let your imagination wander, you never know. Dare to take a night ride on Bloods Point Rd.? Ever notice how everything looks scarier when it's nighttime and images appear in black and white? What's so scary about Blood's Point Cemetery (besides the spooky name)? According to Ghostresearch.org, throughout the years cemetery visitors say that have encountered: • Hellhounds guarding the cemetery • Dogs that come out of nowhere and attack visitors, then instantly disappear • Ghosts and spirits have been seen walking along Blood's Point Rd If you make it to Bloods Point Cemetery, please be respectful of the neighbors and the cemetery grounds, if you don't the spirits will release the Hellhounds on you. So I hit the highway and geared up my zombie repellent suit. Quick and easy find at the given location. So excited, since I was in Cleveland yesterday when the first ones posted. I was on my way to one last night that still hadn’t been claimed when the claimed notification came through. Braaaains!!!!!!! We've been on the lookout for the zombies in our area. One published yesterday morning just 2 miles from home but I was at work and unable to leave. Then another published in the afternoon so we made an attempt to find that one...only to get less than 1/2 mile away before receiving the notication that it had been found by another player. So when this published today, we wasted no time. It still took us over an hour to reach GZ due to other people driving like they had no brains. We located these brains and snapped a pic. Interesting write up of the hiding spot! Thanks for hiding the piece for us to find. We will be making our best attempt to stop by the event next week! Hopefully all goes well and we'll see you there!

cron publish 3 weeks 5 days ago 125 - The Haunting of the Elgen Casket Company

Bluff City Blvd, Elgin, IL, US

This one you will have to use stealth to get it. You are at the back door of the haunted house attraction. You may find a ghoul behind you if your not careful. lol Granted, the building does look even eerier in the middle of a March night while not decked out in all its Halloween lighting and finery. But the first thing I had to ask is why Fitz thought the place was haunted, just because it used to make coffins? Apparently, it is a documented, historical fact that in 1890 a cemetery on the grounds became overcrowded and remains of early settlers were dug up and moved to the new Bluff City Cemetery less than a mile away. Relocating bodies… Doesn’t it always start that way?

The Elgin Metal Casket Company In 1900 construction was completed on a factory building for the Western Thread Company which operated in the space until 1940 when the Elgin Metal Casket Company took over the space. The plant made over 70,000 metal caskets per year – including the caskets of two American presidents (Coolidge and Kennedy) – until its closure in the early 1980s. From what Fitz explains, the building has been the sight of more than a few unsettling occurrences almost from the beginning. For instance, only a month into the thread company’s operation, five mutilated bodies are found in the basement storage area but the crime went unsolved. Ghost activity is regularly reported including sightings of children and women, and it is speculated that the working conditions in the thread factory were questionable. Dubious activities include an unverified tale about a violent foreman who continues to hang around certain areas of the building to this day, waiting for women to come through. The casket company had its own share of misfortune including fatal accidents and one serious cyanide spill 1977, which led to a major fine and the beginning of the end for Elgin Metal Caskets. Not long after the casket factory closed, groups of figures dressed in cloaks were sighted around the now abandoned building and it is later discovered that cult activity was a regular occurrence on the site. Though portions of the factory have had tenants throughout the years, the majority of the building sat empty until Fitz took up a lease in 2009. In the years of his occupancy, Fitz and the Evil Intentions crew realized the more they disturb the site with construction and guests, the more intense the paranormal activity has become.

One of the giant furnaces Employees have seen heavy metal doors inside swing shut on their own and an apparition of a little girl wandering through the rooms. There have been reports of employees having their hair pulled, being shoved, scratched, burned and growled at – all by unseen entities. One room of the haunt, which has ingeniously or otherwise been outfitted as a satanic chapel, is known for more weirdness then the crew can keep track of. According to a local psychic, it is the favorite location of a truly evil entity with a boiling hatred of women in particular – the thread factory foreman perhaps? According to Fitz, every year actors have quit after paranormal encounters in the building. Some have taken off in the middle of a busy night at the haunted house, still wearing their costumes. “There are so many (incidents) — every one of our actors has experienced stuff,” Fitz said. So armed with this background information, I accompany three paranormal investigators and Ryan Kasnick, head of marketing for Evil Intentions and the only one of us able navigate his way through the maze of the factory, into the depths of the building. As vast as the haunt is when it is open to the public, it only accounts for a small percentage of the building’s overall square footage, most of which has no heat, no electricity and is open to the night air via broken windows and crumbling firmament. So Ryan carries a flashlight to keep us from breaking our necks on debris while the rest of us are armed to the teeth with EMF detectors, digital recorders, cameras and one “spirit box” (aka a “white noise” machine). If you aren’t busy watching Ghost Adventures in your free time, then allow me to explain that this is supposedly a way of communicating with spirits by way of ITC (Instrumental trans-communication). Simply put, it is the use of a modified am/fm radio that continuously scans radio stations, and is used to communicate with those on the other side. Our first stop is the basement which encompasses the entire footprint of the main building; meaning the bare, open space spans further into the distance than even Ryan’s industrial flashlight will penetrate – creepy to be sure – and presumably the point closest to any of those bodies that might have missed when the old cemetery was moved. One of the investigators sets up the spirit box while the rest keep close eye on their EMF detectors. I’m clutching the digital voice recorder that I had just used successfully to interview Fitz upstairs for nearly an hour. For some reason (and I am not prepared to speculate as to why) my recorder refused to stay on “record” and instead kept flipping over to “pause.” No matter what I did, including changing out the batteries right then and there, the dang thing wouldn’t keep recording. I eventually bagged it and switched over to the recording feature of my cell phone which functioned perfectly the rest of the evening. The white noise machine and the EMF detectors stubbornly refused to detect anything at all. We then moved to the “furnace room” which took the creep factor to an entirely new level. Remember, this used to be the Elgin Metal Casket Company and all that metal came from somewhere – namely two furnaces large enough to park my car inside. This is the site of several industrial accidents (no OSHA back in the 40’s) and a place where employees have reported being rushed by a shadowy entity. After a nice long stint in the furnace room we decamp without incident to our final investigation site.

Basement orbs Ryan navigates us to that satanic chapel room and invites the two of us girls to take a load off in the pews. The theory here is that the guys will invite the evil foreman to have a go at some new female victims while they try to catch the activity on one of the many devices we’re carrying. Though I will readily admit the atmosphere, added to the overall tension, the pitch dark and the cold, made for a serious adrenalin rush, I am unable to report that I heard, felt or observed anything paranormal. Later as I decompressed (and warmed up) at home with an adult beverage, I strained my ears to several hours of digital recording on my phone, to no avail. The ghosts have shunned me once again. But that doesn’t mean they have never been digitally captured. This picture taken in the basement during another investigation shows what paranormal experts say is dozens of “orbs” (indicators of spirit activity) flying past the investigator’s camera lens. Dust? Maybe, but the basement is the one place that is completely sealed due to flooding, so there is no opportunity for breezes of any kind to blow dust in front of the camera – and that I can vouch for. There has also been success with capturing EVPs on other evenings. Click HERE to listen to a clip from an employee interview when a disembodied male voice can be heard saying “there is no way out of here, this is bullshit!” Last, check out security camera footage from the satanic chapel, captured a few nights after my visit. Remember, this room is part of the haunted attraction and is consequentially monitored along with the other spaces open to the public during the Halloween season. The figures in the room are mannequin props in black, hooded robes.

So there it is – my night of paranormal investigating. For four hours my senses were on high alert, my heart was racing and I felt like I was living a scene from a horror movie. Let’s go down into the basement of the abandoned coffin factory. What could possibly go wrong…? It hardly mattered that the ghosts did not see fit to make an appearance. cron publish 3 weeks 5 days ago 084 - The Zombies of Pottawatomie

E 9th St, Bethel Acres, OK, US

It's likely too good to be true.

From a mile away, you rub your eyes and squint at the impossible castle in the distance, its turret rising up like a beacon out of the prairie landscape. How long have you been on the run? A month? Two? In this zombie wasteland, time has become imprecise and unforgiving. It feels like a thousand lifetimes since you shared a conversation with another living soul. You know that encountering a friendly human tribe is a million-to-one shot, but this is the most substantial structure that you have seen standing in more days than you can remember. Hope grips your heart. Perhaps you have finally stumbled upon a chance at safety, a reprieve from this wretched wandering.

The sun is setting as you draw closer to the "castle". You decide that it must be the remnants of a train depot, long since abandoned. The hope drains from your chest as you pick your way through the trail of a skirmish - a ripped scrap of cloth fluttering from a tree branch, a discarded rifle empty of ammunition, streaks of blood standing stark red against a grey cobblestone walkway, a sign reading "SHAWNEE" hanging twisted and partially ripped from the depot wall... It seems that you will find no allies here. Those that might have welcomed you were likely lost to the insatiable horde.

You need to get out of here, quickly. The newly undead are very likely lurking nearby, waiting to spring an ambush. As you turn to flee toward town, an ancient oil derrick and some tanks catch your eye. Despite the danger, fuel is too precious of a resource to be abandoned, so you make your way toward the crumbling fence. Suddenly, you see something glistening and shiny in the tall grass near a corner post. As you reach down to examine the mysterious object, a snarling sound rises up behind you like something from a nightmare.

"BBBBBBRRRRRRAAAAAAAAINSSSSS..."

You grab the object and run for your life, hoping against hope that the small token clutched in your hand was worth the risk you took to obtain it.

(You are looking for a hide-a-key hidden at the base of a corner post. See the arrow in the photo for exact placement. Please feel free to keep the container.)

Working quickly so as not to disturb the Walkers from their apparent slumber I quickly made my way to the assigned location and within seconds retrieved the package. Luckily this area had enclosures that I could secure after leaving to prevent any unwanted activity following me to my recovery vehicle. Making my way back up the embankment proved to be a challenge and my movement alerted the wrong kind of attention.

cron publish 3 weeks 5 days ago 089 - The Damned on the Dam

W Wekiwa Rd, Sand Springs, OK, US

You need to keep moving... but you are exhausted. You escaped the zombie hordes ravaging the metropolitan area east of here and made it to this point. But the hordes are still behind you. Maybe as much as a mile... if you're lucky. You're glad you still have your knife with you (you may need it later) and that you're in a familiar place. Oklahoma's oldest active geocache lies just to the west--you've been here many times. This time, though, something's different. There's a peculiar smell. You know you need to move south. Crossing the Keystone Dam here is the fastest way to do it. Your other options are to try to swim across the rapidly flowing current of the Arkansas River to your east, swim or float across Keystone Lake to your immediate west, or slowly make your way around the interlocking network of lakes and rivers to your far west counter-clockwise by land, the long way around. Running all day has left you spent, almost completely depleted. The dam is the best answer. There's just one problem: what if, once you're on the dam, zombies suddenly approach from the south? You couldn't continue. But then, with the pursuing horde behind you, you also wouldn't be able to turn back north. You'd only have two options--that is, if you wanted to live: You could either hope to survive the jump into the falls raging from the dam down into the river below on your left; or you could leap into the lake waters on your right and chance swimming. But what if you didn't have the strength and energy to swim? What if you sank underwater due to fatigue and got sucked through the dam by the strong eastern current? Then you hear it, the moans of the undead horde still pursuing from the northeast, "Brraaaaiinss!" You need to move now. The decision is made. Time to cross the dam. You quickly begin the crossing south, trying to jog, but it's hard when you're limping. Again you notice the smell... and dead butterflies... and the bodies of birds strewn here and there along the road atop the dam. You scan the areas on either side of the elevated road. To the right, there's a walkway on the dam about 25' below you covered in large driftwood. The water's obviously been high recently. This walkway ends, however, as you reach a small widened area of the road about a quarter of the way across the dam. Then you notice something else on the right, something suspended from the runoff water gutter holes, something a little yellow and light bluish in color. Oh Lord! They're brains! Brains?!
Horrified and overwhelmed with nausea, you cross over to the left side of the road, lean against the guardrail, and try not to vomit. You look at the raging waters below you. Then something else catches your eye, a little further down river. It's a boat, and there are two men on it waving at you frantically. It looks like they're pointing. Behind you? Oh God! You turn back to the north and see the zombie horde that's been pursuing you. And the zombies see you. "BBBRRRRAAAAAAiiiinnsss!" You turn and move quickly south, glancing back down at the men in the boat, when you realize the one on the right isn't pointing behind you. He's frantically pointing ahead of you, to the south. You look up... and your worst nightmare is realized. Zombie hordes have made their way up both sides of the river and are now coming toward you from both the north and the south ends of the dam! "BBRRAAAAAAAAAIIIIINNSSSSS!" Then you remember the brains hanging from the west gutters near the dam's midpoint. Why? Why on earth would someone suspend brains from this dam? A lure? A trap maybe? Now what do you do???

St. Alban-Graben, Basel, BS, CH

Also los! Der Ort war mir bekannt und so war ich nach wenigen Schritten beim grossen Basilisken. Etwas Suchen und ich hatte auf einmal ein Hirn in den Händen. Jetzt war ich etwas überfordert was das nun bedeutet. Was muss ich damit?
